I love solo games they are great for when the squad are not online to carry you through some multiplayer But are they dying out? Well if you look at games that are getting released a lot more they are focusing on multiplayer as opposed to a story. Battlefield doesn’t have a traditional storyline it follows multiple paths so its lots of small campaigns. Call Of Duty has just released a major Black ops game but with no campaign. Anthem can be run solo but is easier and better done with friends, and there are a lot of Battle Royales coming out which obviously are not single player.
On the other hand, there have been some strong cases for single player games that have come out recently. You have God Of War, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Spiderman to name but a few. These games have smashed all the awards along with the best multiplayer games out. The great thing with single player games is that they have a focus on being eye-catching and beautiful, with great graphics and a seamless storyline you can follow and get drawn into. If you love a story to follow then there are not many games that do this with multiplayer. Division and Division 2 tried but the story is lackluster. The games themselves are very pretty and as multiplayer, playing with buds then it is great fun. A game I think has done very well is Destiny and Destiny 2, they both had captivating stories that you can play alone or with friends and still looked great as well. It is also a platform which can be built upon and increased without them having to release multiple games. Anthem released trying to do something similar to destiny with it also being a looter shooter but they have fallen short with the lack of captivating content, again it is a brilliantly designed game but it has fallen short on content which is needed to keep you wanting to play on.
I myself would not say that single player games are dead but they do seem to be dwindling in number. I have nothing against multiplayer games but I really do love to immerse myself in a story that is captivating and interesting as well as play with buds. Let me know what you think in the comments. I will come back to this post at the end of the year to see if anything has changed!
